Church of Lamaria

The Church of Lamaria, located in the high-altitude village of Ushguli in Svaneti, Georgia, dates back to the 9th-10th centuries. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but its name is associated with the pre-Christian cult of Lamaria, the deity of fertility among the Svans. Lamaria is a symbol of the synthesis of Christianity and ancient traditions. According to legends, Queen Tamara is buried under the church. Architectural elements, including stone iconostases and ancient frescoes, make this church one of the main historical and cultural attractions of the region.
